In 1945 author John Steinbeck immortalized the one mile stretch that was Ocean View Avenue in Monterey with his book ‘Cannery Row.’ Steinbeck modeled his famous fictional character ‘Doc’ in his novels ‘Cannery Row’ and ‘Sweet Thursday’ on his friend and mentor Ed Ricketts. The real Ricketts was a serious and dedicated scientist. His work in the tide pools of the West Coast from Canada to Mexico resulted in helping modern marine biology’s study and understanding of the inter-relationships of marine species. His book, ‘Between Pacific Tides,’ published in 1939, is still in the curriculum for students of marine biology. His home and laboratory at 800 Cannery Row, like the man, lives in the fictional world of literature and in the real world of a street now known as Cannery Row.

The notoriety of Steinbeck’s book focused so much attention on the street that in 1953 the city of Monterey formally changed the street name to ‘Cannery Row.’   [Top]
